Why the Xbox One S Still Shines Beneath the Surface
Though replaced by the newer Xbox One models, the S edition remains beloved for its powerful performance at a wallet-friendly price. But beyond its specs, it packs a surprise: a few lesser-known games delivered in Microsoft’s multiformat ecosystem that many gamers haven’t discovered yet.
1. Forza Horizon 4 – The Ultimate Open-World Drive
While widely praised, Forza Horizon 4 often flies under the radar for “secret” status—but it’s a must-play on Xbox One S! With its stunning open world, dynamic weather, and endless car customization, the game redefined franchise potential. The Xbox One S handles graphical fidelity smoothly, letting you lose yourself in the vibrant landscapes of Empire County.
> Hidden gem mechanic: The “Framework” updates and downloadable content keep the experience fresh—great for endless driving fun.
2. Parthenon (aka Shadow of the Colossus Remake) — The Unseen Classic
Though not exactly existing on the S by name, certain remastered or niche ports find life on these systems in hidden bundles or limited editions. While Parthenon’s partial releases are debated, fans have uncovered rare demos and alternate versions playable on S pods—expanding the classic’s reach unexpectedly.
> Why it’s secret: Not mainstream marketing, but collectible through enthusiast releases.
3. Forza Motorsport 6 – Underappreciated Powerhouse
Less promoted than its Forza Horizon cousins, Forza Motorsport 6 is a precision racing sim that thrives on the Xbox One S’s robust hardware. With over 100 fully licensed cars, detailed physics, and real-world track immersion, it’s a paradise for racing fans who love authenticity.
> Driver bonus: The S’s ergonomic controller support enhances precision driving inputs.
4. Project Scroll – The Indie Racing Feeler
One of the saddest Xbox exclusives on S? Project Scroll—a fluid, narrative-driven racing experience where your car “follows” your storytelling style. Though released more quietly, its compatibility with S remains strong, offering indie craftsmanship rarely found elsewhere.
> Secret strength: Rich audio design and branching storylines keep you engaged longer than expected.
5. Halo: The Master Chief Collection – Patch & Restore Gems
While not “secret,” the collector’s editions on Xbox One S unlock Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODV, and Halo 4—each meticulously collected and optimized for S performance. These remasters add decades of iconic FPS gameplay to your library, perfect for vacation or guardian-mode downtime.
> Why drive now? The S hardware’s smooth rendering helps preserve the games’ fast-paced action fluently, even on older titles.
